Preview | Exeter City Vs Coventry City (Friendly)

Coventry City will end pre-season with a trip to League One side Exeter City, ahead of their 2023/24 EFL Championship campaign, hoping to continue their unbeaten record.

The Team

The Skyblues are likely to field a very strong side to face Exeter City on Saturday, with new signing Luis Binks potentially featuring, as could Milan Van Ewijk, following his high-profiled signing. Midfielder Gustavo Hamer is potentially featuring, but whether goalkeeper Ben Wilson plays a part, remains to be seen.

Previous meeting

The last time the two sides came face-to-face was in August 2019, during an EFL Cup match, with the game being played at St. Andrews, back when Coventry ground-shared with Birmingham City.

The first-half began with a flourish, with the Skyblues taking the lead after just two minutes. Fankaty Dabo set-up Jordy Hiwula who converted from close-range to make it 1-0.

Within 20 minutes, Coventry made it 2-0 after some good work from Zain Westbrooke, saw his free-kick headed home by striker Matt Godden.

Five minutes later, Coventry made it three after Jordy Hiwula grabbed a second of the match, putting the club in complete cruise control and booking a place in the next round.

The second-half fell quiet until the 81st minute, when Exeter pulled one back after Jack Sparkes' cross was converted by fellow defender Ryan Sweeney.

However, Coventry weren't done there as Amadou Bakayoko converted from close range to make it four nil and took the Skyblues into the next round, as we drew Watford.

  • Starting XI - Ben Wilson (GK), Fankaty Dabo, Dom Hyam, Michael Rose, Sam McCallum, Zain Westbrooke, Liam Kelly, Jordan Shipley, Wesley Jobello, Matt Godden, Jordy Hiwula
  • Subs - Marko Marosi (GK), Brandon Mason, Kyle McFadzean, Amadou Bakayoko, Gervane Kastaneer, Josh Eccles, Will Bapaga
