Coventry City captain Liam Kelly has signed a new one-year deal with the Championship side, lasting until June 2024
The midfielder has put pen to paper and what will be his seventh season with the Skyblues, after joining back in 2017 following the club's relegation to League Two.
His Career So Far
The 33-year-old began his professional career with Scottish Premiership side Kilmarnock, spending four years before completing a £250,000 switch to Bristol City. However, within 18-months, he had left for Oldham Athletic and then Leyton Orient in 2016.
After one season with Orient, Kelly penned a two-year deal with Coventry City and took up a vital role alongside Michael Doyle in the club's midfield. Kelly is currently the club's longest serving player and has made over 160 appearances to-date.
The Deal
The defensive midfielder has successfully agreed a new one-year deal with the Skyblues, which will run through to June 2024. The Scotsman was out of contract this summer and appeared destined for an exit.
However, an end of season turnaround saw Kelly become a vital figure in the club's run for the play-off places and has subsequently been offered an extended contract with the Championship side.
Our View
Personally, we believe this is an excellent piece of news for Coventry City, especially given the role he played during the backend of last season.
However, whether he can continue to get ahead of Ben Sheaf, Gustavo Hamer and Josh Eccles remains to be seen. Also it will be interesting to see if he remains as the club's captain but we are not surprised that he was offered a new deal and hopefully he can pick up where he left off next season.
